Voters will soon narrow the field of City Council candidates.
The top two finishers following the Sept. 9 primary will move on to the general election Nov. 4. Some wards don’t have City Council primaries because there are only one or two named candidates in the race.
Read on for primary election basics. Stick with Signal Cleveland for election results and analysis when the ballots are counted. One thing we’ll be watching is turnout. Voter turnout was 17% countywide in the September 2021 elections.

Election info lookup
If you live in Cleveland, your ward and precinct will look different this election. Head over to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections’ website to double-check your polling place and look up what’s on your ballot. You can also check out this map to see the 15 newly drawn council wards that candidates are running to represent.
Last chance to vote early
The last chance to vote in person Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The board’s new location is 1803 Superior Ave. in Cleveland. Polls open on Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
What kind of ID do I need to vote?
You will need to bring one of the following forms of identification:
• Ohio driver’s license
• State of Ohio ID card
• Interim ID form issued by the Ohio BMV
• U.S. passport or passport card
• U.S. military ID card
• Ohio National Guard ID card
• U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ID card
Voting by mail?
If you requested a mail-in ballot, it must be postmarked by Sept. 8 to be counted. You can also drop your ballot off in person at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Here’s a map of where the box is in the parking lot. (Here’s a live feed of the drop box.)
