President Joe Biden declared Thursday, Jan. 9, as a National Day of Mourning to honor the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Federal offices will be closed.
Most federal employees will have the day off, but it is not considered a national holiday. Employees who “cannot be excused for reasons of national security, defense or other essential public business” will report to work, according to the executive order. Non-federal workplaces are not obliged to close.
Which federal offices will be closed ?
All federal agencies will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9.
Keep in mind, post offices will be closed, so mail will not be delivered.
The Social Security Administration suggests people visit their online services page to learn what they can do online during the closure. You can also call Social Security and access some services using the automated telephone service.
In addition, federal courts and federal Archives will be closed.
Will banks be open?
Yes, banks will remain open. The National Day of Mourning is not considered a federal holiday.

Carter’s Cleveland connection
President Carter came to Cleveland several times during his political career and considered the Rev. Otis Moss, Jr. a trusted advisor. Carter visited Olivet Institutional Baptist Church at the invitation of Moss, who served as pastor for more than 30 years.

President Carter’s funeral
President Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. The former president’s funeral will be held Thursday morning at Washington National Cathedral. The service is scheduled to begin at 10a.m. President Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy.
