Charles Brown of Westlake has been without power since Tuesday at 4 p.m. With a family to take care of, it has not been an ideal situation.

“It has definitely affected my everyday life. I have a wife, a 2-year-old and a dog to take care of,” Brown said. “I literally just went grocery shopping the other day and had to throw away a whole bunch of groceries that we just bought–$150 worth of groceries.”

The power outage has meant Brown and his family have not been able to cook for themselves and have had to spend extra money on eating out. As parents and pet owners, they can’t always stay with relatives or friends.

“Our 2-year-old is still in his toddler bed, and we have a dog too,” he said. “We can’t just stay at anyone’s house when dealing with that. My phone was dead all last night. It’s definitely been a hassle.”

Brown is set to host the Insure Our Kids, East vs. West Back to School Kickball Tournament and Back to School Drive this Sunday at Cleveland’s League Park. He remains optimistic about the weekend.

“I’m having a back-to-school drive. I’ll have food, drinks, face painters, sprinklers, bubbles and a bounce house for the kids, all for free,” Brown said. “There will actually be a kickball tournament held at League Park in Cleveland. We will also be raffling off a jersey signed by Nick Chubb a few days ago.”

Brown invites the community to attend the tournament, taking place on Aug. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. at League Park, 6601 Lexington Ave. Entry is free by bringing school supplies to donate. All supplies will be donated to the Fatima Family Center.

Community Reporter (he/him)
I work to gain the trust of Cleveland residents through direct community engagement and storytelling. My goal is to amplify and celebrate the residents and stakeholders who contribute to the success of city neighborhoods. I’m hoping to erase the negative stigma that has been cast on some neighborhoods throughout the years.
