Recommended equipment for beginner anglers

The most important thing to remember about going fishing is to have fun! It’s a chance to spend time with friends and family and to enjoy the great outdoors. Getting started fishing is easy and does not have to be expensive.

Use the list below as a starting checklist. Consider bringing extras of the tackle you might lose, such as hooks, bobbers and weights.

Some of the basic items you’ll need:

• A tackle box to hold your gear.

• A 5- to 6-foot medium action rod and spincasting reel is a great rod and reel for beginners because it’s easy to operate and is inexpensive.

• Eight-pound monofilament line, also known as mono, is a good choice because it’s very durable and inexpensive.

• A #6 hook is a great choice for beginning anglers. These hooks work for pan fish as well as for larger fish such as bass and catfish.

• A pair of needle-nose pliers is an important tool for removing hooks from your fish.

• Quarter-ounce weights such as split-shots are easy to attach and remove because they squeeze to the line with a pair of pliers.

• A round, 1.5-inch plastic bobber is a great starting point. It is easy to attach and will provide enough buoyancy to fish on the surface of the water.

• A large bucket is always good to have around. You can place gear, bait and other items in it; you can sit on it; and you can even keep your fish in it.

• You’ll need plenty of bait such as earthworms, minnows, maggots or wax worms.

• It’s a good idea to pack a rag or paper towels for cleaning your hands. Remember, do not litter.

• Don’t forget your camera! You’ll want to capture all the fun moments.

• Check with state wildlife officials to see if a fishing license is required.

• Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. One sure way to ruin your good time is to come home with a sunburn.

• Find a clean body of water to fish.

• You’re going to get hungry, so make sure to bring refreshments and lunch.

• Pack rain gear.

• This is one you definitely don’t want to forget: lots of patience.
