Every Labor Day for the past 60 years, numerous planes have taken over the downtown lakefront for the annual Cleveland National Air Show. From new military fighter jets and decades-old workhorse aircraft to commercial planes and life flight helicopters, the Cleveland Air Show boasts performances from various professionals and vehicles.

Every year, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Lake Erie shore, not counting the countless Clevelanders who can watch the air demonstrations from their local beaches, parks or even their own front lawns.

If you drive by Burke Lakefront Airport today, you will see that preparations are already well underway for the annual event. Before pilots show up, organizers will be busy setting up the bleachers, box seats and loges that will sit alongside the airport runway.

On the ground there will be various attractions, such as cockpit tours, a 3-D Marines experience and U.S. Army career tables. While this event in part admires the scientific feat of air travel, it is first and foremost a military event. The official Cleveland National Air Show website states, “The Air Show is Northeast Ohio’s largest military event and all branches of the Armed Forces are invited to participate and showcase the quality personnel, equipment and opportunities offered by today’s U.S. Military Service to a large public audience.”

Any military event is incomplete without veterans and active service members. In fact, a large percentage of the pilots participating in the Labor Day demonstrations are military personnel. Most notable, the iconic Blue Angels are a team made up of a specific branch of the military.

Do you know which branch the Blue Angels serve in?
