Dec. 10: Cuyahoga County Board of Elections

Covered by Documenter Tucker Handley (notes)

Do you want to build a ballot box?

Presidential candidates weren’t the lone focus during early in-person voting. The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections also invited kids under 16 years old to participate in its 12th annual “Kids Election.” About 740 kids cast ballots, voting for their favorite fictional characters, ice cream flavor and sport. The board reviewed the results at its Dec. 10 meeting.

“Frozen” ice princess Elsa dominated the results in the “Favorite Princess” category, netting 120 votes. Tiana from “Princess and the Frog” finished second with 98 votes.

One of the tightest races was between Spider-Man and Wonder Woman for favorite superhero. Spider-Man came in first by 13 votes more than Wonder Woman. Cleveland’s own Superman didn’t make the ballot. Voters had the chance to write in candidates, which 86 did for this category.

Another close race was between cookies-and-cream and chocolate for best ice cream flavor. Cookies-and-cream ultimately won with 147 votes. Chocolate came in second with 130 votes.

In terms of sports, soccer took home the top spot with 163 votes. Basketball came in a distant second, with 43 fewer votes than soccer. Football came in fifth place with 66 votes.

As part of the county’s efforts to increase youth voter participation, the county also hosted a summit in September. Signal Cleveland’s Mikey Indriolo attended the event and spoke to high school students about the importance of voting and civic engagement.

Cuyahoga County Council recount confirmed

The Board of Elections also voted to certify two recounts.

County Council candidate Robert Schleper Jr. beat out incumbent Jack Schron for a seat representing District 6, flipping the seat from red to blue. Issue 37 – a proposed Parma Heights charter amendment – did not pass. In both races, the recounts confirmed the original results.

Brian Cleary, manager of the Board of Elections ballot department, explained the recount process. The recounts involved:

  • Counting around 5% of the total ballots by hand and by machine to see if they match
  • Counting the remaining ballots by machine to see if the count matches the original machine count
