Rain in the forecast means good fishing ahead in Cleveland
Fishing in the rain may not be everyone’s idea of a perfect day on the water, but seasoned anglers know that a little rain can often lead to some of the best catches and most enjoyable outings. Rain can change the behavior of fish, increase your chances of a successful catch, and provide a unique connection with nature.
Rain has a significant impact on water conditions and fish behavior. As rain falls, it can cause a drop in water temperature and increase oxygen levels, which can make fish more active. The rain also stirs up the water, dislodging insects and other food sources, which can trigger feeding frenzies among fish. Bass, trout and other species often become more aggressive during rain, making them easier to catch.

When fishing in the rain, it’s essential to have the right gear to stay comfortable and safe. Waterproof clothing, including a good rain jacket, pants and boots, will keep you dry and allow you to focus on fishing rather than the weather. Consider using a wide-brimmed hat or a cap with a brim to keep rain out of your eyes. Additionally, make sure your tackle box is waterproof or keep your gear in waterproof bags.
During rain, fish are more likely to move into shallower waters. The rainwater running into the lake or river can carry food from the shore, attracting fish closer to the banks. Focus your fishing efforts on these areas, especially near inlets, outlets or areas where water flows into the body of water. Fish often congregate in these spots to feed on insects and small creatures washed in by the rain.
For live bait selections, experiment with traditional choices such as night crawlers, minnows, redworms and wax worms. If using artificial lures, opt for brightly colored lures or those that create a lot of movement, as rain can reduce water clarity. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and topwater lures are excellent choices because they mimic the prey that fish are hunting in the turbulent water.
While fishing in the rain can be rewarding, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Rain can make surfaces slippery, so be careful when walking on wet rocks or boat decks. If you’re fishing from a boat, ensure that it’s equipped with all necessary safety gear, and keep an eye on the weather. If you notice lightning or hear thunder, head back to shore immediately. Lightning is especially dangerous near water, so don’t take any risks.
Rainfall doesn’t have to put a damper on your fishing plans. It can offer a unique and peaceful experience. The sound of raindrops hitting the water, the mist rising from the surface, and the solitude of being on the water during less-than-ideal weather all provide a connection with nature in a different way. Appreciate the tranquility that comes with fishing in the rain.
So, the next time the forecast calls for rain, grab your gear, head to the water, and get ready for an adventure that only a rainy day can provide.
