Today is the deadline for filing federal and state income tax returns. If you are running behind on getting your tax information together, you can file for an extension. However, an extension only applies to your return – if you owe money, you’ll need to make a payment or you may have a penalty.
How can I get an extension to file my federal tax return?
You can file for a federal extension for free using an IRS Free File partner found here: https://www.irs.gov/filing/file-an-extension-through-irs-free-file.
In general, an extension will buy you until October 15 to file.
If you earned less than $66,819 last year, you can contact the Cuyahoga County Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition (EITC) or call 211. The coalition has limited appointments at a few of its sites that operate year round.
Where’s my federal refund?
If you already filed your federal taxes and expect a refund, you can check the status of your refund here: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/wmr/
Questions about Ohio tax returns?
Ohio does not have its own income tax filing extension form or request but it does honor the IRS federal extension form. However, the state can make you pay a penalty if you owe taxes that you don’t pay by April 15.
If you have questions about your state income tax return, you can visit the Ohio Department of Taxation here: https://myportal.tax.ohio.gov/TAP/_/
You can also call the department at (800) 282-1780 with questions about state income tax and school district tax filing questions. The call center is open today from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m.
Residents who use TTY or adaptive telephone equipment should call 1-800-750-0750.
Where’s my state refund?
You can check on the status of your Ohio refund here: https://tax.ohio.gov/individual/refunds/wheres-my-refund
You can also call Ohio’s automated system at 1-800-282-1784. If you filed your return by mail, your refund status will take longer to show up.
