The most important thing to remember about going fishing is to have fun! It’s a chance to spend time with friends and family and to enjoy the great outdoors. Getting started fishing is easy – and it does not have to be expensive.

Research fishing in Cleveland

Before heading out, research the location where you plan to fish. Learn about the type of fish species in the body of water where you plan on fishing, the location of piers, walkways, and shorelines to fish from, lavatory facilities, available parking, boat launch areas, bait shops in the area and any specific rules or restrictions.

Pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid fishing during severe weather conditions. Dress appropriately for the weather and the environment where you’ll be fishing. Wear comfortable clothing, including layers that you can add or removeas needed. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent.

What to pack

It’s important to prepare your fishing gear before heading out. This includes fishing rods and reels, lines, hooks, bait or lures, tackle box, fishing net, and any other accessories you might need.

Pack plenty of food and water to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day. Consider bringing sandwiches, snacks and drinks that will stay fresh and cold in a cooler.

Bring along safety essentials such as a first-aid kit, a multi-tool or knife, a flashlight, and a fully charged mobile phone or two-way radio for communication in case of an emergency. In addition, before heading out, let someone know where you’ll be fishing and when you expect to return.

Obtain the necessary fishing permits and licenses for the area where you’ll be fishing. Remember, fishing should be a fun and relaxing activity. Enjoy the outdoors, and the people you’re fishing with, be patient, appreciate nature, respect the environment, and practice ethical fishing practices. (At The Fishing Foundation, we practice catch-and-release of the fish we catch.)

Be sure to dispose of any trash or fishing line properly, and try to leave the area cleaner than you found it.
