The Power Rankings from Signal Cleveland is a weekly roundup of the people, places and things wielding their power, for better or worse, in Greater Cleveland. Cleveland City Council tops the list this week.

Last week, an apologetic public officials, Pride in the CLE and the unstoppable Guardians got the nod. This week’s line-up is a little different.

Have suggestions for next week’s rankings? Submit an idea here.

1. Cleveland City Council

Hoping you won’t notice: In a whirlwind of votes before summer recess, the members passed a bill — not debated publicly before that day — that doubled the limits on contributions to their own campaigns. Because if we’ve learned anything about politics, it’s that adding more money makes everything better.

2. Morelle McCane

“I’m representing Cleveland”: The Glenville native and boxer left for Paris to compete in the Olympics. Anyone planning watch parties, please let us know!

3. Parade the Circle

Entrancing in the streets: To add to a quote from iconic painter Georgia O’Keeffe: “To create one’s own world takes courage. And a lot of paper maché.”

4. Elan Eichler/Mighty Misc

Rest in power: Cleveland Scene readers chose the recently departed rapper (and Cleveland Documenter) as Best Hip Hop Artist for 2024. He’s missed, but we’ll always have his music, including a song just released yesterday.

5. Cleveland Public Auditorium

The O.G. gets the G: The venerable venue will host home games of the Cleveland Charge, the Cavs’ G League affiliate.

6. Greater Cleveland Partnership

Join us: The business-boosting org wooed college students who are visiting Cleveland for internships in hopes of getting some to live here.

7. Data Days

Organizers of the annual data-sharing and brainstorming conference are taking suggestions for 2024 workshops. How about “The Math Ain’t Mathin’: Managing Deshaun Watson’s Cap Hit”?

8. 10 Cent Beer Night

We hope everyone celebrated or at least poured out a plastic cup of Stroh’s for the 50th anniversary of the event that even Philadelphia sports fans can snicker at.

Important stories are hiding everywhere, and my favorite part of journalism has always been the collaboration, working with colleagues to find the patterns in the information we’re constantly gathering. I don’t care whose name appears in the byline; the work is its own reward. As Batman said to Commissioner Gordon in “The Dark Knight,” “I’m whatever Gotham needs me to be.”
