Whether it’s streaming your favorite shows or simply paying your bills online, just about everything involves access to the World Wide Web. Over the last year, local nonprofit DigitalC has tried to provide a cheaper internet alternative after receiving funding from the city. For $18 per month, more and more residents are choosing DigitalC.
In May, Signal Cleveland reported that DigitalC had 305 households connected to its Canopy internet service. Now there are more than 2,800, according to DigitalC spokesperson Valerie Jerome.
DigitalC promises “high-speed” internet with upload speeds of 100 megabits per second. Basically, it’s fast enough to binge “Severance” before the second season drops on Jan. 17.

Canopy also guarantees “no gimmicks,” which includes no contracts or hidden costs. The $18 price is “locked” and installation is free.
The catch? Canopy isn’t available in all Cleveland neighborhoods – yet.
“We currently have numerous network towers under construction that will be activated in the coming days and weeks,” Jerome said.
In September, DigitalC also started providing free internet to households with CMSD students. Now, students can play Minecraft instead of doing their homework.
As of December, more than 900 households have signed up for Canopy as part of the partnership, Jerome said.
The citywide buildout of Canopy is expected to last until June 2025, according to Jerome. The buildout’s initial phase focused on Cleveland’s East Side but recently expanded west.
How to sign up for DigitalC’s $18 internet
Call DigitalC at 216-777-3859 or check availability online by entering your address. If DigitalC has towers up in your neighborhood, the next step is to schedule a free installation appointment.
If not, you’ll be asked to join the waitlist. You can enter your phone number or email address to receive notifications when service arrives in your neighborhood.
