A big part of Signal’s mission is to rebuild the connection between the Cleveland community and the information people need. We’ve also heard loud and clear that people want unbiased information that helps them make their own decisions. We think local media is a key partner in filling the information gaps.

That is why we are a big part of Data Days CLE, a local conference devoted to civic data and civic tech in Northeast Ohio. The ability to access, use, and understand data is one tool in a toolbox that helps people understand complicated civic processes and make decisions. Data Days Cleveland is a space where people can come to learn more about how data is used in the civic sector, and gain skills and tools on how to access and use civic data.

At Data Days Cleveland, Northeast Ohio’s data experts across the public, nonprofit and private sector come together to discuss their work, trends in important community issues, and talk about best practices in working with civic data and civic tech.

Data Days at a glance

We start our day this year with a look at how the City of Cleveland has made rapid progress opening up data to the public with data.clevelandohio.gov. The head of geographic information systems (GIS) at Cuyahoga County will facilitate that discussion, bringing a lens of how this work can be replicated across other public sector agencies.

From there, we host four sets of concurrent breakout sessions, covering everything from remote sensing data and how it interacts with indigenous ecological knowledge, to the numbers and people behind the statewide purge of the voter rolls. Take a look at our full schedule for details on all 30-something presentations.

Our day culminates in a keynote speech from Yeshimabeit Milner, founder and CEO of Data for Black Lives. Ms. Milner’s global perspective will ground the day in what’s most important; using data and tech as a positive force in solving community problems. We’re looking forward to the wisdom and perspective she can bring to the challenge of reclaiming data as a tool for social change.
