Signal Cleveland is proud to support two community spelling bees this year for children in East Cleveland and Cleveland’s Central neighborhood.

Members of the Signal Cleveland Listening Team designed and piloted the first spelling bee in 2023 after hearing from community stakeholders that students in Central  could benefit from targeted educational interventions.

This year, two members of that original team are coordinating two separate spelling bees. Kellie Morris is launching the first East Cleveland Community Spelling Bee in partnership with the East Cleveland Public Library and supported by Neighborhood Connections. La Queta Worley is coordinating the 3rd Annual Central Community Spelling Bee with support from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland and The Cobalt Group.

“I love working on literacy skills with the students” Worley said. “It reminds me of when I was their age.”

Registration is open to any student in kindergarten-8th grade who is active in those communities.

Historically, newspapers sponsored spelling bees in their communities. The Signal Cleveland bees are a throwback to that time.
