Cleveland Metropolitan School District leaders are asking parents, caregivers, school staff and community members who want a say in which district schools will stay open and which could close or merge to attend a meeting over the next three weeks.
The district has not given a number for how many schools it plans to shutter or merge. At recent elementary and high school open houses, school principals shared some of the metrics the officials will consider, including: student enrollment, enrollment trends, the building’s condition, and its capacity.
The district will also consider factors specific to each school, including student demographics, special programming offered, transportation options, potential costs to upgrade and maintain buildings.
A district spokesperson told Signal Cleveland said the exact timetable won’t be set until after the upcoming community meetings, but emphasized that no schools would be closed before the 2026-27 academic year. However, the district generally opens its enrollment portal for parents to chose schools in the fall (last year it opened in November) and student assignments are released in January.
