The total solar eclipse will pass directly over Cleveland, and we should have a good view. The last time Northeast Ohio was in the path of totality – the path created by the moon’s shadow – was 1806.That is the year Lewis and Clark completed their expedition to the Louisiana Territory.
Turns out, Cleveland will be one of the best places to be during the total eclipse. Why? Because it’s close to the center line in the path of totality. Cleveland State research astronomer Jay Reynolds told 3News this celestial event on April 8 is one not to be missed.
“This is a big deal. Because in the rest of our lifetimes, it is not going to happen here,” Reynolds said. “Not like this, not this long.”
While experts say Avon Lake will likely be the best place for viewing, if you are in downtown Cleveland, you may only miss out on a few seconds as compared to Avon Lake.
“Here it’s going to last almost four minutes,” Reynolds said. “That is really rare.”

Safety tips for a total solar eclipse
To safely view the solar eclipse, you need special glasses called ISO certified safe solar eclipse glasses. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun. Looking at its intense light for even a few seconds can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Most sunglasses and welding masks are not dark enough to protect your eyes.

If you are looking for eclipse glasses, Cleveland Metroparks shops continue to sell solar eclipse glasses online while supplies last. NASA Glenn Research Center will hand out free glasses at several events, including one this weekend.
Keep your skin safe as well
NASA advises on their website, “If you are watching an entire eclipse, you may be in direct sunlight for hours. Remember to wear sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing to prevent skin damage.”
